Atopy

aleksandra started this conversation

Dear friends visiting this website,

I am desperately seeking help...I cannot do anything to help my boyfriend, cause I'm not a M.D, but I cannot agree to his suffering and do completely nothing about it either. He has atopy, a very bad case. For many years it was unrecognized and mistaken for another illness and the ill medical treatment he had received, has now it's consequences. The doctor gave him some steroid ointment to cure his skin, but it did not help; on the contrary, it "burnt" his skin, and almost completely destroyed skin lipids:( Now another doctor says that probably he will never recover from this:( He takes some moistening tablets and applies moisturizerto his face, but it doesn't help a bit, he says that he feels great pain all the time. He has been on a diet for 4 months, but it doesn't help either. I heard that atopy is incurable and I look for informations on websites, web forums, but they are mainly about allergy...and I think that in his case it's more about skin damage than allergy, and there is nobody with similar symptoms. I don't know what to do, he is almost a nervous wreck now...If you know anything about the medical treatment, ways of curing it, or M.D.'s who specialize in atopy, please, help. Any answer that would give me hope is extremely precious to me...

I didn't realize you were in Poland, sorry about that.  Shea butter is an ingredient in many skin creams - I guess he needs to find out which moisturizer gives him the most relief.  Aloe vera, shea butter, avocado oil, cocoa butter - these are all great ingredients so test them all out.  You may even be able to get tubs of them in health food stores.   I was thinking about unscented because any added perfumes might irritate his skin.  Some stores will give you samples to take home so you can test them one at a time, or use samples on different areas of his arm so you can see which one works the best for him.  I haven't heard of bioskincare cream but I checked out the website and seems worth a try!  Bets wishes, Rosie

Thanks! I searched some websites and found interesting information on efalizumab - it seems like it helps, but I'm afraid it's very expensive and unavailable in Poland. Could you tell me something more about these shea butter creams? Perhaps you know something about bioskincare cream? I found some info about it, but I'm not sure if it's good for atopy...anyway, thanks a lot:)

Hi there, and welcome.  I did a quick search and found these pages on atopy:

http://www.medpagetoday.com/Dermatology/Atopy/

http://www.aafp.org/afp/990915ap/1191.html

As you mentioned, it talks about diet and also about probiotics and how that can help - not sure if he has tried that yet.  The second page mentions aotmeal baths and tar treatments.  I work at Bath & Body Worksand we have some good unscented shea butter creams that might help.

Best wishes,

Rosie
